While Shepherds Watched
Village Carols from the Fountain,
Ingbirchworth

In the bleak Pennine uplands to the north-west of
Penistone, you might expect
to encounter a few Whiteface Woodland sheep, perhaps even the occasional
shepherd, but to find a hundred or more carollers crammed into an out-of-the-way
pub singing eight versions of 'While Shepherds Watched' seems an unlikely
prospect; but such is the case at the Fountain in Ingbirchworth. Many other
carols are also performed and go to make up a fascinating local repertoire. The
carollers sing unaccompanied and such is the quality of their singing that they
are frequently mistaken for a famous choir, off duty. This high-quality
recording of nineteen carols captures the atmosphere of one of their sessions
and is accompanied by a book giving the words of the carols and the story of the
tradition. Each sale generates funds for Penistone Church Restoration Appeal.
"Verges on the essential ... truly atmospheric."
