To Celebrate Christmas
Village Carols from the Travellers
Rest, Oughtibridge

Oughtibridge in South Yorkshire has one of the finest repertoires of local
Christmas carols that you are likely to hear anywhere in Britain. The action
takes place in the taproom of the Travellers Rest, where the singers gather on
the Saturdays up to Christmas. The traditional accompaniment on the piano
includes the remarkable feature of the 'symphonies' -- delightful musical
interludes played between the verses of the carols. Both the carols and the
accompaniment date back over 200 years to a time when Christmas was an
unashamedly joyous celebration. This spirit lives on and can be seen in the
enthusiasm of the carollers and the power of their singing. The high-quality
recording captures twenty-one superb local carols. The words of the carols and
the story of the tradition are told in an accompanying 44-page illustrated book.
Each sale includes a donation to a local charity, the CHRIS Fund, which supports
Sheffield Children's Hospital.
