Village Carols from Foolow in the Peak District

Foolow is an exceptionally pretty village, nestling on the high limestone plateau some two miles west of the Plague Village of Eyam. It is the home of one of the most remarkable traditions of carolling in England. The Singers start their annual village tour at the Chapel. They gather momentum around the homes and reach a climax at the Manor, followed by a brief sortie to the Cross. It is a transient tradition, for they only sing on Christmas Day. Their repertoire is of great character and unique to their village. Alongside one or two standard carols, there are several of local origin that only Foolow has kept up. To share Foolow's carols is both a privilege and a pleasure. This high-quality recording captures twenty-four superb local carols. The words of the carols and the story of this tradition are told in the accompanying illustrated book. Each sale includes a donation to a local charity, the Bakewell and District Mobile Physiotherapy Service.
