Village Carols from Hathersage in the Peak District

Hathersage boasts one of the most delightful repertoires of local Christmas carols that you could ever have the good fortune to hear. The carols are performed by a group of friends, known as the Little John Singers, who for the last twenty-five years have toured the local pubs and old people's home at Christmas in order to keep the tradition alive. They are not a choir -- they do not sing from music, hold regular practices, or have a conductor -- but they do sing some wonderful carols with great enthusiasm and talent. This high-quality recording captures twenty carols from the local repertoire which has been handed down by word of mouth over several generations. The story of this unique tradition is told in an accompanying 48-page illustrated book, which also contains the words of the carols. Each sale includes a donation to a local charity, the Hope Valley Medical Aids Fund.

Here is soul singing which lifts the heart and demands participation.
