Festival of Village Carols 2008
Grenoside Community Centre

Guests at the 2008 Festival were:

The Crown and Glove Carollers from Stannington, near Sheffield
Beeston Methodist Carol Choir, from Beeston, Notts
'Parti Bronheulog', Plygain carol-singers from north Powys,Wales

The following excerpts of the singing are taken from YouTube and were taken by David Burbidge

Ian Russell workshopping "Old Foster" before the evening performance.  The name comes from its early 19th century composer, John Foster, and the tune is one of the liveliest of the tunes to which "While Shepherds watched . . . " is sung in the Sheffield tradition. It was originally set to a metrical version of Psalm 47. Tradition at Sheffield has it, rather like the Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah, that any performance of this is a 'stander upper'.

Parti Bronheulog are from mid-Wales and keep up the old traditions of Welsh carol singing.
They were the main guests at the 2008 Festival.
The books are for words only, and all the music is memorised.

"We singers make bold as in days of old to celebrate Christmas and bring you good cheer. . . "  This was the finale of the evening, with a well earned round of applause for Ian at the conclusion of proceedings - the best part of 9 hours of singing and playing!
